This weekend I went to estate sales, thrift shops and antique stores with my parents. I’m in the early stages of redecorating our apartment and so I was on the hunt for two main things: a big, beautiful bookshelf’s or similar organization device, and something to use as a converted entertainment center.
I found neither.
However, among the THREE vintage coats, old tin boxes, scissors, THREE new purses and a few other odds and ends, I found an enormous amount of inspiration.
I knew that I could possibly find things that really inspire me in this way, but it’s been so long since I just let myself get swept away in the storyline of a random, long-loved piece.
And get swept away, I certainly did this time. From beautiful old clocks to phones to couches and chairs, to tins and patches on a old Girl Scouts sweater, I came up with so many stories for each character and scene that these things inspired.
I’ll be spending some of my downtime doodling from these photos over the next couple weeks and I’ll make sure and share my progress with you.
But if there’s any real takeaway from this weekend, I hope it’s a reminder that the small, beautiful things that make up daily life can be magical and can be the spark needed in an otherwise creative dry spell. (Also, maybe take your sketchbook everywhere or at very least your phone to take reference pics ;)
Would you like to see a little haul of what I picked up this weekend? I’m pretty pleased with my treasures!
Anyway, I hope you’re well and have had as wonderful a weekend as I have!
